The Last Shift

How one email changed the direction of my life.

It’s Monday morning, August 25, 2025, when I get an email from my employer saying that they will be closing the doors permanently in 2 days, with a severance pay that barely covers a fourth of my rent which is due in 5 days after that. With total shock, I proceeded to get ready for my final shift…ever.

Monday’s were usually slow at the restaurant so there were only 2 servers scheduled but this Monday ended up being busier than usual since the company decided to announce the closure on their socials to gather as many pennies as they could before closing for good.

And yours truly ended up taking 99% of the tables that came in because my lazy a** coworker simply didn’t feel like taking any tables other than her extremely small private event. I feel like this is the perfect time to remind you that your coworkers are sending you evil eye most of time (this b*tch included) in addition to your “friends” and family but I digress.

As I continued my shift, closing out the last table, doing my last checkout, finishing up sidework, and eventually clocking out for the last time, I had an inner knowing (my splenic authority) that I would never work in a restaurant again but since I was in survival mode at the time I couldn’t trust it. Most of my coworkers ended up transferring to the sister restaurants of the company and I just heard all 7 restaurants are now permanently closed as of July 2026. Apparently things were worse than I thought.

About a week later, I reluctantly applied to one other restaurant. My old coworker had become a manager so I asked for a referral and figured I would get the job instantly because that is how I have gotten most of my jobs, but within 1 minute of the Zoom group interview, I had an inner knowing (my splenic authority again) that I didn’t get the job. A few days later I received an email that confirmed what I already knew. I hate to say it but they made a huge mistake because I have that 8 frequency, meaning places get busier just by my presence.

Here’s a fun fact: I ended up having lunch in that area weeks later and we ended up walking past that restaurant and the manager who conducted the Zoom group interview saw me and I kid you not, she straight up froze with her mouth wide open and I didn’t even have a full face on that day haha.

In all honesty I was more relieved than disappointed, I explained why in this blog post, I just remember my body was bracing stressing out about parking, how I was going to strategically pretend to like my new coworkers and managers, and the overall dread of dealing with the general public. At that point I had no desire to work at any restaurant, so I ended up filing for unemployment while I figured out how I could make money online…YESTERDAY.

Since I was in survival mode, I was more focused on making money rather than creating value which resulted in trying to sell random digital products on Etsy then trying to become a fashion influencer on Youtube. Needless to say I gave up on both.

Once I did, I decided to revisit an idea I had for a restaurant app. I had channeled this idea about two months before the restaurant officially closed. I never told anyone I worked with at the time about this idea because I know human nature and the response would either be hate, envy, jealousy or all the above.

Now that I didn’t have to worry about the monitoring spirits, I proceeded desperately by asking Chat GPT “how can I create this app as QUICKLY as possible and start making money?” Chat GPT responded by telling me that creating this app would be a process and it proceeded to outline the steps of that process. I decided to move forward anyway. At the time I thought I was creating an app that could change the hospitality industry but it actually became a journey of personal transformation.
